Winter Skills Duration: 2 days Minimum : Maximum numbers - 2 : 6
In this short course, designed for summer hillwalkers who want to extend their sport into the more demanding winter season, we will cover equipment selection, navigation, use of ice axe and crampons, avalanche awareness and snow belaying. In addition to the equipment shown in the basic list you will need:
We may be able to supply ice axes and crampons (depending on the size of the group) - check when you phone to book. There will be a small charge for hire and fitting. It would be possible for us to meet groups at a more central mainland location, eg Cairngorm, Glencoe or Aonach Mor, perhaps for a weekend but this would involve the payment of your guide's travel and accommodation costs.
Winter Mountaineering Duration: 5 days Minimum : Maximum numbers - 2 : 4 Cost: £265 (on Skye - for day trips to the near mainland there will be a small surcharge to cover fuel and for mainland courses you will be charged at cost for your guide's travel and accommodation). Essentially an extended version of the winter skills course, the extra days allow topics to be covered in more detail and the techniques learned to be put into practice during the ascents of some easier ridges or gullies. Equipment required and fitness levels are the same as for the winter skills course.
